Are you getting your Happy Hormone fix!?
Massage Therapy is so much more than a pamper treatment.
Many of us know that if we have knots and aches, a massage can help to break this down, and allow the body to move once again with more ease and comfort. And we know that if we want a special treat, or a pamper session, a massage feels good and is a nice thing to do.
But, I believe that massage Therapy can have a profoundly deeper healing effect than many might know.
OXYTOCIN? YES PLEASE! When we receive a massage and come to a relaxed state, and have a human connection through caring touch - our bodies release a happy hormone called Oxytocin. This makes you feel good, and is also released when we hug a loved one or bond with someone. This will help you to over come any anxieties, depression, insomnia, stress and general unbalance and leave you feeling more glowing and positive!
In this day and age with all the technology we have which allows us to be more "connected", ironically more and more of us can be left feeling lonely and disconnected from others. We may be chatting constantly on Facebook, Twitter, Messaging and Whats App - but this then acts as a barrier to actual human contact, without which our happy hormones - Oxytocin, Serotonin and Dopamine will be less produced and ultimately we feel flatter, sadder and more alone. Massage Therapy gives you a safe space to come and receive a treatment with kind, caring touch, which will release these hormones and bring some sunshine to your day.
I mentioned Dopamine in the previous paragraph - one of the happy hormones that really makes you feel great! Dopamine is part of our bodies reward system. For example, sometimes when you have had a bad day, you might reach for some comfort food which isn't necessarily good for you, but your body releases its reward hormone - Dopamine. In the times when we hunted for food and it wasn't always available, our bodies rewarded us for our efforts with this awesome hormone. But sometimes we unknowingly abuse this. Why does it feel good to binge eat when we are sad? Dopamine. If you suffer with over eating and bingeing, coming for regular massage and releasing happy hormones through this method, which is kind to yourself instead of harmful could make a huge impact on your quality of life.
Let's talk about stress, and it's effect on your adrenaline levels. This is a topic close to my heart and something I have spent many years researching and experiencing for myself. Many of you will have heard the phrase "fight or flight". This is when you are in a situation of perceived threat - whether emotional or physical. Your body shuts down what it doesn't need imminently i.e digestion - and floods your system with Adrenaline - so you can move, and fast if you need to. In times gone by this was helpful when we may have been faced with a Tiger. But in our modern society, most of our stresses are mental or emotional but our body reacts exactly the same way. Hey presto, we have IBS, chronic arthritis, migraines, insomnia, digestive upsets and many more problems. Stress IS the biggest cause of DIS-EASE in today's society . Our bodies can not cope when always in this heightened state of awareness and adrenaline. We need to slow down, give ourselves space to breathe, be, think, and re-balance. It is imperative for our health. Instead of treating symptoms with painkillers, we should be dealing with the causes. And stress reduction is a great place to start.
